Neurodiversity Week at The Oratory

Today is the start of Neurodiversity Week, a worldwide initiative founded by Siena Castellon MBE in 2018 because she wanted to change the way learning differences are perceived.

Sienna is a passionate anti-bullying campaigner and neurodiversity advocate. She is a BBC Radio 1 Teen Hero, was recently selected by the United Nations to be one of their 17 Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals and is author of The Spectrum Girl's Survival Guide. As a teenager with ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia, her experience has been that people often focus on the challenges of neurological diversity. Sienna wanted to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological difference, and she wanted to change the narrative and create a more balanced view that focuses equally on the talents and strengths of neurodiversity.

This week provides an opportunity for us all to explore and celebrate the diversity of the human mind that includes the different ways people think, process information, behave and communicate. These differences should be recognised, understood, respected, and celebrated.

Every classroom is neurodiverse, and every pupil will have a different way of thinking, feeling, and learning. Embracing these differences helps all pupils feel valued and gives them the opportunity to thrive.
