The Oratory Celebrates British Science Week 2024

Oratory Science celebrated British Science Week 2024 with a whole host of exciting events held throughout the week.

The annual Oratory Science dinner took place on Saturday evening, featuring science-infused drinks and dishes, from smoked colour-changing cocktails, the most realistic plant-based 3D printed fillet flank by Redefine Meats and glowing panna cotta. The menu detailed how each of these culinary delights has been brought to life with the help of our scientific knowledge. The dress code was 'Smart - with a scientific twist' and prizes were awarded for creativity.

On Wednesday, Andrew Colville, Head of Oratory Science, gave an interactive lecture in the theatre to local primary schools from Checkendon, Goring-on-Thames, Woodcote and Whitchurch. This year's theme was 'Renewable Fuels.' Pupils learnt about how different fuels burn, how we can all reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the manufacture of different fuels, including how to make biodiesel from chip fat! Mr Colville was aided by our wonderful lab technicians, Mrs Kenna and Mrs Mainprize and two of our 6th Form A Level Scientists, Harvey and Ifeanyi, who are both studying A Level Biology and Chemistry.

Celebrations culminated with a 4th Form Physics Experience Day trip where they attended in-class workshops to strengthen their understanding of the 'terminal velocity' and 'forces, motion and collisions' topics, which was followed by a trip to Basingstoke's iFly and Hollywood Bowl for some Physics in action! At iFly Indoor Sky Diving, pupils had the opportunity to take two flights at the wind tunnel, one of which was an optional high flight. This is the closest experience to terminal velocity they can get without jumping out of an aeroplane!

Pupils then played a round of Tenpin bowling at Hollywood Bowl, using the physics of bowling as an example to consolidate ideas around forces, motion, momentum and inertia.

Next month, Oratory Scientists in 1st Form will have the opportunity to learn about STEM careers with a trip to Silverstone.
