"Attending a Catholic school opens a new perspective inside you" Jefferson, 6th Form

Jefferson in Oratory 6th Form has many projects, one of which is Journalism. He has had much success in his efforts to date and is currently Editor-in-Chief for Harbingers' Magazine, a weekly online Current Affairs magazine written and edited by teenagers worldwide.

In his latest article for this magazine, Jefferson describes what it is like to be an atheist in a Catholic school. His article is heartfelt and positive. Here is an excerpt:

"I’m an atheist who has spent four years studying at a Catholic school in the UK. That may sound like a nightmare, but believe me, it has been a valuable experience.

One might wonder why my parents picked this school despite our family background as atheists. The reason was simple: religious affiliation should not limit education and it makes you more aware of life. In addition, my school’s art department is renowned for its high standards throughout the UK. Interestingly, more than 60% of pupils at the school (a mix of day and boarding) are non-Catholics.

The school has made me more open-minded, allowing me to consider different perspectives on religion and life. This leaves me wondering: how might the world change if more people were exposed to diverse religious practices from a young age, shaping their understanding and tolerance? I feel safe growing up in the school’s environment and its Catholic life, and I have grown more mature and confident."

Our pupils come from a wide range of backgrounds: Catholic families, families from other Christian denominations, families from other world faiths, and families with no religious background. All are welcome and are just as much a part of our community and participate together.

"Incredible community spirit – inclusive, diverse, and above all happy" An Oratory parent
