L6th Form Oratory Art visit Tate Modern

L6th Form Oratory Art enjoyed a fantastic quadruple exhibition day at Tate Modern on Friday.

As well as the main collectio, Oratory students enjoyed viewing:

  • Solid Light - a focused exhibition dedicated to the immersive works of Anthony McCall, known for his innovative installations of light.
  • Electric Dreams - Art and Technology before the Internet, celebrating the early innovators of optical, kinetic, programmed and digital art.
  • Ghost & Spirit by The Mike Kelley Foundation - featuring the late Kelley's breakthrough 'craft' sculptures made from textile and plush toys through to his multi-media installations such as Day Is Done.
  • Zanele Muholi Photography - experiencing the powerful work of visual activist Zanele Muholi, one of the most acclaimed photographers working today, who documents and celebrates the lives of South Africa’s Black lesbian, gay, trans, queer and intersex communities.

The students asked all the classic questions: “Is it Art? What’s the fine line between shock and novelty? Should we reject traditional ways of working? What is Art in the post modern age?"

The trip was also a great way to kick-start the Art A Level essay component, with titles based around the main collection and its thematic areas of materials and objects, media networks, in the studio, and Art and Society.
