Oratory Classics Roman Britain & Ancient World Trip

Oratory GCSE Latin students spent the weekend exploring some sites of Roman Wales and Gloucestershire.

The trip began with a guided tour of Chedworth Roman villa and a trip to Cirencester. The students have been studying amphitheatres this term so it was exciting to be able to stand in Cirencester’s version.

On the Saturday, they visited Dolaucothi gold mines where they were expertly guided by Nevil, who used to work at The Oratory! They were able to go through the tunnels chiselled out by the Roman miners nearly 2,000 years ago. The group then enjoyed a spot of bowling in Carmarthen before stopping in to visit the amphitheatre there. This one was not so easy to imagine in its original state, but it is believed to have been the furthest west in the Roman Empire.

On Sunday, the weather was appropriately British to imagine themselves as Roman soldiers walking along Sarn Helen and stopping by the Roman fort. Students saw some of the faint traces of Roman buildings in this beautiful spot before heading back to The Oratory. It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip with a good mix of sites to enhance everyone's understanding of the Romans in Britain.
