Oratory Rugby wins Gordon School’s U16 Invitational Rugby 7s
The Rugby Sevens season has got off to an unbelievable start for Oratory Rugby this weekend with The Oratory U16s team winning Gordon’s School’s Invitational
Pitched in with some huge rugby playing schools such as Brighton College, Dulwich College, Eton College, Wellington College, Tonbridge School and many more, Oratory Rugby produced a stunning performance to be crowned winners of the event.
The team progressed through their group strongly, defeating Seaford College, Trinity School, Maidstone Grammar and Dulwich College while playing some excellent sevens. The semi-final victory over Shiplake College was followed by the final against Brighton College, which was to be a huge test. Having led twice, the team found themselves 21-14 down with 35 seconds to play. O. Robinson crashed over to narrow the margin to 2 points but with the unsuccessful conversion they trailed with only the final play left. J. Clark's excellent kick-off helped the team to recover the ball and J.J. McCarthy showed good awareness and speed to feed J. Clark, who then showed good composure and power to score in the left-hand corner to win the tournament in dramatic style.
Mikey Hennessy, Head of Oratory Rugby says “When I looked through the draw and saw some of the huge school names, I had feared it could be a long and difficult day. How wrong I was as The Oratory boys stepped up and showed no shortage of courage, skill and athleticism. Indeed, there would be few Oratory rugby victories over the years, despite our proud Sevens tradition, that would equal the success of today. The last play of the Final was one of the most dramatic moments I have experienced as a coach and a credit to the boys' never say die attitude.”
